5 Facts About Lipstick

  1. Back in ancient Greece, wearing lipstick meant that you were probably a prostitute. Most women didn't wear any makeup at the time, so red lipstick was often used as a call sign.
  2. During the French Revolution, wearing red lipstick signified that you were a supporter of the rich and aristocracy and could've gotten you killed. Also in Kansas in 1915, there was a bill introduced that make it illegal for women under 44 to wear lipstick, because it "created a false impression".
  3. The first recorded use of the word "lipstick" dates back to 1000 AD and is an old English word. But back then, they called it "Lippa Sticka".
  4. Sephora, a major seller of lipstick around the world, is owner by LVMH - the same company that owns Fendi, Dior, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and many more.
  5. Lipstick goes through many trends every few years. In the early 20th century, there were just a few dark shades. In the early 1930s Elizabeth Arden began to introduce different colours, in the 1970s and 1980s gold and black became popular with punk and goth cultures. In 2012 bright bold colours of lipstick became trendy again, to match with the makeup of the time.

  4. Just bookstores. Especially old bookstores or bookstores that you can sit and drink coffee whilst reading a book.
